Matthews Mayor Won't Seek 10th Term in Office

MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Mayor Lee Myers is turning in his gavel. The nine-term mayor announced Tuesday morning he will not be seeking re-election.

Currently, Myers is the longest serving active mayor in Mecklenburg County and the small town of Matthews more than doubled in population size in his 18 years in office.

Myers also served on two major transportation committees in the region helping to direct road funds and the construction of Charlotte's light rail line.… Continue

2 Firefighters Treated for Heat Exhaustion

Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion while fighting an industrial fire in Matthews Monday afternoon.

Several departments battled heavy smoke and flames at the East Coast Container Corp. on Campus Ridge Road near Central Piedmont Community College's Levine campus.

"We're in the high 90s here today. In the heat of the fire we've had some heat-related issues," Mike Petleski, assistant fire marshal with Mecklenburg County, said. "One or two people were treated on the scene."

Miss North Carolina is from Matthews - Hoping to Raise Scoliosis Awareness

Katherine Southard, a woman who relearned how to dance after having surgery for curvature of the spine, was crowned Miss North Carolina on Saturday night.

Southard, who is from Matthews but won the open Miss Raleigh contest, has scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine.

Southard's experience, including surgery two years ago to insert a metal rod in her back, gave her a new confidence, she said.
