I say No! If you take a ride down Sam Newell Rd. from downton Matthews toward Independence, you will notice a big change!! A very arrogant, self-centered developer has bulldozed an unnecessary amount of trees that buffered our small street. Why would the City of Matthews allow so many OLD, beautiful trees taken down for the purpose of a new medical facility. He could have left a tree buffer. The building and surrounding area could have been constructed without destroying so much foilage and our quaint neighborhood!

I'm saddened every time I see this happen. Monroe and much too much of Union County is experiencing the same thing - soooo much growth that seems to include unnecessary & complete 'deforestation." Sadly, it's more cost effective to bulldoze them down than to slow down the building process by making the equipment/workers work around and between the trees they could leave.

In defense of the developer, it is very difficult o build the size of project that they anticipate while retaining large growth trees. The stress is, more often than not, just too much for the trees. I am, however, hopeful that we will see some replanting. The project concept looks good but I am disappointed to see such clear cutting. It's bitter-sweet. AB

Lynne - As a resident whose property abuts that development, rest assured we tried to reason w/said developer in regards to adhering to the tree ordinance, even though his property was 'Grand-fathered in' (For nearly two years prior to this starting). After that idea was refused, we tried to get him to leave a 'natural buffer' as we had 6-8 old growth trees w/in the 25' required buffer. Also, not negotiable. This is another example of the city needing to do a better job of protecting its residents and changing the current buffers, etc. particularly between commercial & residential property types. After the clear cutting was done, they proceeded to dig a 30' deep hole, right on the property line. The original plans called for retail on Sam Newell & condos/residiential to be adjacent to my property. I now have a several story kidney dialysis building exactly 25' from my back porch. Ironically enough. a 'Tree City USA' sign sits right by the eyesore on Sam Newell Rd. I encourage everyone to step up & make their feelings known to our new Mayor, the zoning board, Commissioners, etc. Needless to say, there are responsible ways to develop any parcel of property, & then there are ways that put the most $$$ in the developers pocket. Thuis is clearly a case of the latter of those two options.

I have been in this area all of my life and I have continually seen the town bend to the wishes of the developers. This is why we need to make sure we vote for the right people in Matthews.

I live in Matthews and have had a so called Pastor destroy my property for his gain and lie about it. Attack my family on his blog. They still have not planted required buffer and the church breaks the noise level law and does not care. I have found that no one cares unless it happens to them. I am still having to deal with this situation.

Developers have not cut down a single tree or built a single building (or any other structure) without the blessings (permit) of government officials. If a piece of undeveloped property produces a couple of grand in tax... think about the multiples of confiscated income once there are multi tax-sources and much higher tax rate zoning. Planners exist to play the shell game with the citizens. They permit (literally) the cutting of trees and then tax the public to build Greenways. It's really a cool gig if you pay attention.
