Smell Like Dirt

A Three-fer

A short Down and Dirty tip on how to make your freezer more efficient, save energy and plan for natural disasters….all by doing one simple thing. And as we enter hurricane and tornado season, I think this tip is pretty timely as well.

Water!

After a long dry spell (pun intended), we’re back with a video about water. Of the four elements of a wildlife habitat: Food, water, shelter and places to raise young, I think water is the most important. EVERYTHING needs water and being creative in providing water for wildlife can lead to hours [...]

Last Composting/Wildlife Gardening Class until the Fall

I’m teaching my last composting and wildlife gardening class until Sept 09 this Saturday, May 9 at the Charlotte Nature Museum (1658 Sterling Rd, Charlotte, NC – (704) 372-6261). This class is sponsored by Mecklenburg County and attendees get a wire compost bin and a book about composting and sustainable gardening practices. Its [...]

Pheno-What?

You probably know about The Feederwatch Program at Cornell, right? Its a program that allows birders of all skills levels—beginners, experts and everyone in between–become Citizen Scientists by recording their bird sightings around the country to help scientists track population levels, spread of diseases, etc. As a birder, its a great tool for [...]

Creating a Wildlife Habitat Series

If you live near Charlotte, come and join us for a two part series on Creating a Wildlife Habitat. On Tuesday, March 3 at 7pm. I will be presenting how to provide the four critical elements needed for a Wildlife Habitat (food, water, shelter, places to raise young), planting with natives, lawn and chemical [...]

Bluebirds!!

Its that time of year!  The bluebirds are starting to shop for a nice home in which to raise their families this year and if you want to ensure that they pick YOUR backyard, mealworms are the ticket!  Of course, you still need to make sure you are providing them with a quality home that [...]

Birding with Binoculars

Just in time for the Great Backyard Bird Count, here’s a Quick Tip to help you find those birds using binoculars.   The GBBC is a great way to practice your birding skills while helping ornithologists track birding populations, migration patterns, etc.  The Bird Count starts Friday the 13th and goes thru Monday the 16th.  You [...]

Put all your egg(shells) in one basket!

Another Down & Dirty tip using eggshells to feed the birds.  Eggshells are high in calcium and if you put them out for your birds to eat, it will give them “strong teeth and bones” as the saying goes, but will also give them the nutrients they need to lay strong eggs this spring.  So [...]

The R’s

Back in the day, it used to be there were just Three R’s—Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. And then they started adding more: Repurpose, Repair, Refuse, etc. Not sure how many we are up to now, but let’s pause at repurpose for just a second. Don’t you just love taking something that was [...]

Rufous Hummingbird

Last week I had the rare privilege of observing the banding of a Rufous Hummingbird, in the dead of winter, here in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Although still rare here, I had heard of sightings of this type of hummingbird in past wiinters. They breed in Southern Alaska, Western Canada and [...]

Carol,

My apologies for the delayed response. I had a family emergency to take care of which took most of my time sunday and rest of week. I am currently catching up with my inbox. My apologies.

btw, I need your help as well. There is a board position open to which I wish to nominate. No, not the Exxon Mobil or Fannie Mae, but Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District board. Pls let me know if this is in line with HAWK requirements so I can assist you in furthering the cause.

I am attending the vermipost course, but as an observer. I have bought the gusamito worm tower, so I may not need the worm bin. But, I need some time of yours to understand first hand how you operate your bin. My first pound of worms reached heaven(I guess) in 1.5 weeks. Seems I am messing something big time. Pls help.

Hi,
Thanks for the response, I am interested in both groups. We are also into birds. I added 182 to My list after a birding trip to Costa Rica Last fall. We had Summer Tanagers with young in the Stanley county garden this summer. I also watched a Yellow Billed Coukoo eat the catapillers in the trees surronding the garden this July. Enjoyed your vidio on blue birds. They has also been in the garden with their young for the past five years. You can see the daylily fram by clicking on the web site On my page. Thanks again for the responce.

we picked up the stunned bird; but were clueless to help. Sadly the little one died in our hands...
My son put it by a plant bed and stuck a few pennies in the sand - for the journey, I guess!
