Not sure on that. I believe you can unselect it so it doesn't show. Its part of the software, so I can't change it. Thanks for your compliments!

My Book Reviews

Darryl Parker gave 4 stars to: Are We Rome?

Darryl Parker reviewed:

Are We Rome?: The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America by Cullen Murphy

4.0 out of 5 stars A wakeup call to the Apathetic,
If they can be awakened, this is a book to do it. Murphy grandly illustrates the parallels between Rome and the US while leaving room for differences and opportunities to not repeat history.

I found it most intriguing that Murphy highlights Rome did not fall in some epochal collapse, but was literally stretched apart through that time's own version of globalization and the responsibilities of the geopolitical leader.

We do have something the Romans did not. Within our grasp are the tools of interconnectedness that heretofore did not exist. We have the opportunity to assess progress and failure more rapidly than ever before and the populace carries a level of knowledge, if engaged, that is unprecedented. The strength of the individual en masse within any system has never been more apparent. In that regard, we have been ripping at the insular layers of our governance and are flushing out the corruption and misguidance.

The question is whether or not it is soon enough...

Darryl Parker gave 4 stars to: Putting It Up With Honey

Darryl Parker reviewed:

Putting It Up With Honey: A Natural Foods Canning and Preserving Cookbook by Susan Geiskopf

4.0 out of 5 stars Canning with Honey,
This is one of the best guides I've found in using honey as a replacement in canning and food preservation. The Ball Blue Canning Book #21400 only goes so far and doesn't get into the level of recipes that Geiskopf does. She has a wide variety of recipes. She also gets into pickles, relishes, dried foods and some dips which don't all require honey.

Fowl Play

We have been awaiting the arrival of chickens since March. Weekly trips to Renfrow Hardware kept us informed as to the progress of the new chicks and when we could expect the "sexed" chicks to be in (versus straight run which might include roosters). The big day was this past Saturday. We loaded up and headed over. No luck. They had not come in as expected. The remainder of the weekend was spent in great anticipation of their scheduled arrival on Tuesday. Understanding more about chicks after o… Continue

Ten Great Reasons to Shop Local First

From the Seacoast Buy Local Program (Portsmouth, NH) 1. Significantly more money re-circulates in Matthews when purchases are made at locally owned, rather than nationally owned businesses. Locally owned businesses help keep more money in our community because local business owners spend more of the profits of their businesses where they live - here - and locally owned businesses purchase from other local businesses. 2. Most new jobs are provided by locally owned businesses. Smal… Continue

Garden in Spring

Ok - here are a few photos of my garden thus far this year. I've kept it to cold hardy plants for now. I'll be planting more after April 15th - mostly tomatoes, squashes and beans.

You can see garlic, onions, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, snap peas, radishes, carrots, and cabbages (for sauerkraut!)… Continue

Hi Darryl,
I'm so glad I stopped by, too! My imatthews.com sticker is on my Saturn Vue! I will leave the stack at Town Hall tomorrow. I'm also researching the tips you gave me on the authors and the local business consortium, which I think is a fantastic idea. Love your blog about New Hampshire, by the way! Ahhh, my old stomping grounds.
