I get more questions about the drought these days and how a water feature uses water. The short answer is that a water feature uses less water than watering a lawn. The explainination for this is fairly simple, a pond or waterfeature when properly built (with no leaks) recirculates the water over and over as part of the filtration and esthetic property of a pond. When you water your lawn the water is lost to the ground never to be retrieved for your use...and the real kicker is the lawn only uses a very small percentage of the water you put on it. Over the years watering can use thousands of gallons of water whereas a pond only needs to be topped off in very hot weather to compensate for evaporation. Toppoing off a pond that uses up 200-300 gallons surface area of your yard should be as little as 20-50 gallons a month in the heat of the summer and much less in the cooler months. Comparitivly, a patch of lawn at that size can take 50 gallons of water each time you water which for many people is two to three times a week or more. And again the lawn only uses a small percentage of that water, a pond uses 100% of the water you put in it.
So if you have doubts about installing a water feature because of our current rain situation, not to worry, you are actually conserving water by installing a pond or water feature. So get to work and make your own backyard oasis with a clear concience.
And of course you can contact me for questions or advice on any type of waterfeature and fountain questions you may have.
