My Book Reviews

Darryl Parker gave 5 stars to: Man's Search for Meaning

Darryl Parker reviewed:

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

5.0 out of 5 stars A path from apathy...,
From the perspective of a member in a culture consumed in the "existential vacuum", Frankl's experiences and logotheraphy discussion offers a call to action for those prepared to live a meaningful life. This book will change you.

Darryl Parker gave 4 stars to: Are We Rome?

Darryl Parker reviewed:

Are We Rome?: The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America by Cullen Murphy

4.0 out of 5 stars A wakeup call to the Apathetic,
If they can be awakened, this is a book to do it. Murphy grandly illustrates the parallels between Rome and the US while leaving room for differences and opportunities to not repeat history.

I found it most intriguing that Murphy highlights Rome did not fall in some epochal collapse, but was literally stretched apart through that time's own version of globalization and the responsibilities of the geopolitical leader.

We do have something the Romans did not. Within our grasp are the tools of interconnectedness that heretofore did not exist. We have the opportunity to assess progress and failure more rapidly than ever before and the populace carries a level of knowledge, if engaged, that is unprecedented. The strength of the individual en masse within any system has never been more apparent. In that regard, we have been ripping at the insular layers of our governance and are flushing out the corruption and misguidance.

The question is whether or not it is soon enough...

Fowl Play

We have been awaiting the arrival of chickens since March. Weekly trips to Renfrow Hardware kept us informed as to the progress of the new chicks and when we could expect the "sexed" chicks to be in (versus straight run which might include roosters). The big day was this past Saturday. We loaded up and headed over. No luck. They had not come in as expected. The remainder of the weekend was spent in great anticipation of their scheduled arrival on Tuesday. Understanding more about chicks after o… Continue

Its been a little over a month since my last post. There has been some nice progress in the growth of the garden. Nearly the same viewpoint as one month ago: Peas are coming in: Continue

Ten Great Reasons to Shop Local First

From the Seacoast Buy Local Program (Portsmouth, NH) 1. Significantly more money re-circulates in Matthews when purchases are made at locally owned, rather than nationally owned businesses. Locally owned businesses help keep more money in our community because local business owners spend more of the profits of their businesses where they live - here - and locally owned businesses purchase from other local businesses. 2. Most new jobs are provided by locally owned businesses. Smal… Continue

Garden in Spring

Ok - here are a few photos of my garden thus far this year. I've kept it to cold hardy plants for now. I'll be planting more after April 15th - mostly tomatoes, squashes and beans.

You can see garlic, onions, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, snap peas, radishes, carrots, and cabbages (for sauerkraut!)… Continue

Hi back, Darryl,

What a terrific garden! Beautiful. My husband & I have a mini one in our yard, which we lovingly take of, mostly tomatoes (and boy, with all those rotten ones hurting people nowadays, it sure is nice to know we are growing out own), plus lots of peppers of all kinds, cukes, and herbs. Oh, we are growing some fennel this year, too. Being of Italian background, I ate lots of it growing up. ..very tasty just raw with a little salt and pepper and dipped in some olive oil. ;! Yum!

Nice to meet you.. Laura and I work the Reference Desk here at the library - come by and say howdy sometime.

Daryl, I just joined and was wondering what it would take to get my logo on the right side of the website? I have a new business called GarageSaleCharlotte.com - I would be willing to put a permanent Banner Ad on my site for iMatthews if that would help with the cost of advertising on this site.

Let me know what you think,
Thanks

D-
How hard (expensive?) would it be to create a dating-service-like website to match up Matthews residents for car pooling purposes? Jay and I were talking this weekend about how to find someone in Matthews who worked in the Ballantyne area M-F, 8-5ish. I've never used a dating service (no, really!) but don't you put in a profile and then get matched up with someone with similar interests? Could iMatthews accommodate something like that?

Great photo's of the garden. Now Carol wants chickens, thanks, thanks a lot.

Carol mentioned you were interested in learning Bridge. As I think she said, if you ever want to play spades, let us know.

Have a good week.

Great to meet you as well finally. I don't know why I didn't input my full name. Thanks for catching it.
